Back in July I covered all twenty sides, over four separate articles, giving a brief paragraph or so on what I thought their fans could expect from the season. Now, with the January window now open and heading into the second half of the season I wanted to see exactly how well (or poorly) I was doing. The link to the original article involving the first five sides can be found here.
Everton:
What I Said:
Good that they are not in the Europa League this season as I always feels this competition is detrimental to League form. I suggested that a good cup run wouldn’t be out of the question while also pushing for a European place.
Where Are They Currently?
Roberto Martinez currently has the Toffee’s in eleventh position, which is six positions away from challenging for a European spot. That said, points wise they are only six points away from United right now.
Add to that the Capital One Cup Semi Final they find themselves in, and with the FA Cup still to kick off for Premier League sides, anything still remains possible for the side.
Leicester:
What I Said:
I wasn’t convinced that Ranieri was the right man for the job and was angling for another season spent at the wrong end of the table with the ‘Tinkerman’ leaving before the 38th game was to be played.
Where Are They Currently?
Leicester City’s season is just as surprising to me as Chelsea’s, for opposite reasons. As much as I think Chelsea are underachieving at the moment then double it to get close to how much I think Leicester are over achieving.
Liverpool:
What I Said:
I thought that Brendan Rodgers might want to start handing out his resume and thought Liverpool would fall further away from the side who pushed City all the way to the title a couple of seasons ago. I even said that Liverpool could finish as much as 30 points behind the eventual winners.
Where Are They Currently?
Brendan Rodgers has long since gone from the Kop and now Klopp is in, but not much has changed. Already twelve points behind the current leaders I think a title is certainly out of the question for another season and maybe that 30 point gap wasn’t such a bad prediction.
Manchester City:
What I Said:
I showed concerns with the defense and that the forward line would have to bail them out on occasion. I said a battle between the two Manchester clubs for the title was most likely with the added successful run in the Champions League.
Where Are They Currently?
Currently third after a bad away run in with a defense that looks suspect at best. That said City do find themselves only three points behind current leaders (not United) with a Capital One Cup Semi Final coming up. A win in that competition could propel them in the second half of the season just like it did in Pellegrini’s first season.
On the Champions League front we did finally see City qualify top of their group and they now avoid Barcelona and Madrid in the next round and must really fancy their chances against Dynamo Kiev.
Manchester United:
What I Said:
I felt that United would be better this season than they were last season, and there was return of Champions League football. I thought it was going to be a battle between the Manchester clubs but as we enter the new year United are outside the top four and things are not great at Old Trafford.
Where Are They Currently?
The Champions League adventure is over after a poor performance in the Group Stage. Instead of welcoming Barcelona, Madrid or another European elite sides to Old Trafford on European nights they now await FC Midtjylland.
