SCI Lesson (CHC5A)

So we are coming to the last part of the course right now and I must say I have enjoyed it a lot more than I actually thought I would. I told you guys at the very beginning about my apprehensions with doing an online course. However I decided early on that if it gave me some feedback on my work and/or some contacts then it would be worth the money.

It turned out to be so much more valuable than the $'s and so it is a shame to be finishing up.

Anyway down to the coursework. This was a two part project and I will cover part two later on in this entry, but for now let's concentrate on Parto Uno!

Part 1: Produce a cover letter for a Children's book.

Now the reason for a cover letter is just to simply inform the publisher that you are submitting a story for them to consider for publication (and politely ask them to read it).
It is important though, especially if you haven't spoken with this publisher before, that you note other published stories/articles you have had. It is okay if you haven't had anything published, which I haven't as yet, so just avoid that subject. After all what use is there in saying 'take a chance on me, no one else has so far!'

I did my proposal on an idea for a Children's Book that I had called 'Kevin's Grandma'. In the cover letter I explained briefly that the story begins with Kevin losing his parents and him having to move in with his very sweet, but strange Grandma.

Things happen while with his Grandma and while she has no special powers or particular insightful wisdom to pass on, she does have a Motorcycle in the shed, tattoos that her social club members know nothing about and an intolerance of crime and injustice!

Part 2: Write an article for an Adult Audience (500-700 words)

For this I decided to write a brilliant article about the riots in England that had taken place a few days earlier. It was in depth and from the view of an Englishman who was many miles away. I referenced the Blitz of London during the Second World War when the German Luftwaffe rained bombs down on England for 76 consecutive nights. Back then there was a famous poster which simply said 'Keep Calm and Carry On'.
London was also targeted by the IRA, ridden with plague, fires, flooded and had storms, but the people carried on. Then in 2005, 7/7 London was again the target of a terrorist attack when bombs were detonated on the subway system and one on an iconic London bus.

Anyway it was good. So good in fact that I think my Instructor forgot there was a part 1!
