Titles, Europe and Relegation: Premier League

It is starting to become crunch time in all the various divisions of the English soccer scene. Teams vying to save themselves from relegation at one end of the tables. Each day I will look at the divisions within the English game, starting with the Vanarama National League and moving up until the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney - The England Debate Rages

Englands recent friendly game against Germany at the weekend proved one thing, we do have reliable goalscorers in our country and sometimes all they need is the right opportunity. Now we have talk that maybe Rooney isn't the greatest striker we have and maybe, just maybe, his name should not be the first one on the team sheet. Selecting by merit rather than name, now there is a concept. Will Wayne Rooney be selected for the Euros? I think he still will but the talk now is not as it was four years ago as he must go for England to compete. Just over four years ago, when Mello Capello was still in charge, I wrote this on the Rooney selection debate, and the general England boys club where the same names are selected each tournament and expecting different results.

Aston Villa Readying For Relegation

The news coming out if Villa Park this season has not been the greatest. In fact you could say that there has been very little to no good news this season as far as the Villains fans can see. Today though, it was announced that ex Manager, Brian Little, was to be one of two new members of the Villa board, with the other being David Bernstein.

Premier League: Who's Staying, Who's Going?

There is, quite rightly, a lot of attention at the top of the English Premier League. People asking whether Leicester City could actually pull off a remarkable title win at the expense of the big boys. Whether they manage to hold on or not, the fact is they are all but certain to be in the top four when the curtain comes down and that will mean Champions League football.

Soccer In America (Part Three)

A while back, I read an article on a British website titled, Major League Soccer: Can the MLS Revolution Survive and Thrive?” I think it can, but it has to keep changing and evolving with the times. The real question is, can soccer as a whole thrive in America where football, baseball, basketball and even hockey take more sport column inches than the World’s game?

Aston Villa: Villains In Trouble

It is now looking increasingly likely that Aston Villa will be one of the three sides relegated from the Premiership this season. Currently cemented to the bottom of the League, a change of Manager has done little to change the path the Villains are on. In fact, it could be argued that had the owners stayed with Tim Sherwood, then he might have been able to lift the players to be in a better position than they currently are. Of course, this is all theoretical, and even if Villa would survive this season it is clear that the troubles at the club go much further than managers and playing staff.

FA Cup Preview (Part Two)

This weekend sees the kick off, for the top teams at least, the oldest knockout cup competition in sports, the FA Cup. Joining at the 3rd round, the Premiership sides get to join a competition which is already seen numerous rounds, including pre qualifying, with the lower league sides mouths watering at the prospect of traveling to or welcoming Premier League sides and big name players to their homes. This is part one of my two part look at the fixtures involving Premier League sides.

Premier League Beginning Of The Season Prediction Review

Back in July I covered all twenty sides, over four separate articles, giving a brief paragraph or so on what I thought their fans could expect from the season. Now, with the January window now open and heading into the second half of the season I wanted to see exactly how well (or poorly) I was doing. The link to the original article involving the first five sides can be found here.

Chelsea Can Still Get Top Four, Hiddink Think So!

It has not been the season the Chelsea fans would have expected after romping to the Premier League title last season. From the very first game there were signs of trouble at Stamford Bridge with things going wrong both on and off the pitch. The public berating Eva Carneiro, then Chelsea doctor, was the start of the end for Jose Mourinho.
