Practical time! In this section I had a choice between three different options for which task to choose. I thought about one for a while before finally deciding to step out of my comfort zone and try something that I have never even given a second thought about, non fiction.
Option 1: Prepare an outline/idea summary for a Fad Book.
Option 2: Prepare an outline/idea summary for a Non Fiction/factual children's book.
Option 3: Write the first page of a children's story and prepare a drawing for that page.
Of course I went for 'Option 2'. Like I had said earlier this was a real step away from my comfort zone as I usually am writing stories for children, not presenting factual work in a way children will understand, and more importantly, enjoy.
I actually wrote to the Instructor afterwards and this is what I wrote, "For this task I was all set to take option #1. However I decided to delve into the unknown and try my hand with a NF project. I am glad I decided on that course of action."
My idea summery was well received about the plight of Sea Turtles. The second page had a breakdown of all the 6 species (Green, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Leatherback, Loggerhead and Kemps) and listed their predators, mating habits, the result of human impact, their habitat and of course what their endangered status currently is.
I spoke in the main body of the proposal about my youth and how I was a member of the Young Environmentalists, in which we were encouraged to write reports of such things from global warming to recycling and everything in between.
I pointed out how Sea Turtles are not gender bias in terms of the audience. That is to say that if I was to do a similar book on Sharks, then most likely it would just attract male readers more than females. I also have numerous resources within my local area, the Baltimore National Aquarium for example have an effort underway regarding the plight of the Kemp turtle.
The Smithsonian in DC also have educational sections regarding all creatures on the earth not just Sea Turtles. Both locations would be a wealth of knowledge for getting this book right and making a good enjoyable read while getting the information across.
My Instructor absolutely loved the proposal and the thought behind the association with the Aquarium and Smithsonian that she thinks this project really could have legs and maybe I should follow through on it. I don't know, maybe I should. 95%
