FA Cup: Liverpool v Oldham Pits Father Against Son

When Oldham travel to Liverpool later today it will come as great relief for Lee Johnson who will no doubt tell his boys to just enjoy the day. Struggling in the division two down from their hosts Sunday it will be a good day out against some top class players, but shouldn't distract from their ultimate goal, staying up.

That said, a good performance, regardless of the score, could just give them that boost they need in order to go back to their League with a renewed confidence. Oldham did very well in this competition back in the early 1990's, reaching the Semi Finals twice in four years. Now that doesn't compare to their hosts on Sunday, who have won it a total seven times, the last of which was in 2006.

The last time Oldham traveled to Liverpool it was in the Premier League back in October of 1993 and the home side won 2-1 on that day. As for the FA Cup meetings between the two have actually been more recent with this being the third time in the last three years they have met in this competition.

Last year it was in the Fourth Round and Oldham were the hosts that day, and won 3-2. Previous to that was the Round Three two years ago, almost to the day, when Oldham traveled to Anfield and left with a 5-1 defeat.

With Luis Suarez in the form he is in right now, who would bet against a similar result this time around. That said if Johnson and his boys can keep the side frustrated for the first twenty minutes or so then who knows what could happen after.

A side story to this fixture is that of Anton Rodgers, who plays for Oldham Athletic. Anton will face off against his father Brendan, who will look to mastermind the quick dismissal of his sons sides fight.
